Retiring from House

Sixty Rajya Sabha members from 17 states, including four nominated members, are retiring from the Upper House over the next few weeks

SACHIN TENDULKAR (Nominated)

The former cricketer was nominated for a berth on April 27, 2012. He had tried to move a motion on the future of sport in India late last year but had not been allowed to speak due to disruption­s.

K RAHMAN KHAN (Congress)

The leader from Karnataka was deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012 and earned praise for his understand­ing of parliament­ary procedures and conduct of the house

NARESH AGARWAL (BJP)

The former Samajwadi Party leader’s, who recently joined the BJP, was a livewire presence in the Upper House. He often rasied ‘points of order’ (that draw attention to violation of rules) on various issues

TAPAN KUMAR SEN CPI(M)

A trade union leader from West Bengal, who had also worked with Steel Authority of India, enjoyed acceptance across the party lines and always spoke about issues related to farmers and workers

K PARASARAN (Nominated)

A former advocate general of Tamil Nadu, who also served as the attorney general of India under the past Congress government­s, was a widely accepted member and known for his attendance in the House

P J KURIEN (Congress)

Kurien, who is the deputy chairman of the Upper House since August 2012, first got elected to Lok Sabha in 1980. He won praise for the conduct of the House and it is not very sure that his party would send him again to the house from Kerala
