Strive for the betterment of society: Guv to civil servants
GURUGRAM: The city hosted an event to mark Civil Services Day on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki appealed to all civil servants to dedicate the day to self-introspection.
The event in Gurugram was organised by the district administration at the Haryana Institute of Public Administration (HIPA). The governor was the chief guest at the event.DC Vinay Pratap Singh, director general, HIPA, Dr G Prasanna Kumar, director, HIPA, MD Sinha, and DCP Deepak Gahlot were among the many dignitaries attending the event. Later, Solanki also visited a private hospital for the launch of ‘Healthy Lungs, Healthy Haryana’, a state initiative.
On Friday, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the two-day Civil Services Day event in New Delhi.
“A civil servant should act as public servant. The time has come for the civil servants to introspect and recall the pledge to work for the betterment of society that they make before joining the services. A civil servant should strive towards meeting the expectations of the common man. Only then can they ensure good governance," Solanki said. He even invoked Tulsidas and Mahatma Gandhi and cited their selfless contribution to the society to stress on the need for civil servants to give back to the society.
Ashok Lavasa, one of the two election commissioners and a retired 1980 batch IAS officer of Haryana cadre, also addressed the civil servants at the event.
“The major challenge for civil servants is to steer the society in the right direction. The country has made a lot of progress since independence and our civil servants have had to handle myriad challenges in the last 70 years. I believe that our bureaucrats should focus on how they can play a constructive role in shaping the country’s progress in the years ahead,” Lavasa said.
“Civil servants should never forget their responsibility of working for the betterment of the society. This was the vision of (Sardar Vallabhbhai) Patel and his fellow freedom fighters. They brought us freedom had set sights on democracy flourishing in the country,” MC Gupta, a 1960 batch retired IAS officer and former state chief secretary.
