Transport firm accountant murder solved, one held

BATALA: The Batala police on Saturday claimed to have solved the murder mystery of a transport company accountant, who was reportedly shot dead on October 13 last year near Taragarh village here when he was carrying ₹2 lakh. The police have arrested the prime accused and seized from him one .32 bore revolver, 5 cartridges and one motorcycle used in the crime.

At a press conference, SSP, Batala, Opinderjee­t Singh Ghumman, said that, on October 13, one Ganesh Kumar, owner of Ganesh Transport Company, lodged a complaint with the police that his accountant Jaspal, a resident of Awanka village, was shot dead near Taragarh village while he was going to Batala

to give ₹2 lakh to truck drivers at the FCI godown.

Subsequent­ly, a special investigat­ion team (SIT) was constitute­d under DSP(city) Suba Singh and, after a thorough investigat­ion, the police arrested one Kuljeet Singh,42, a resident of Kala Afghana village on Saturday. During initial interrogat­ion, the accused confessed his crime and said that he, along with his companion, Baljeet Singh alias Kakku, developed friendship with him and planned his murder to loot money as they knew that Jaspal used to come to the godown to make payment to truck drivers. Baljeet is still at large.

On October 13, they called Jaspal, who told them that he was coming to Batala and as per the plan, they offered a lift to Jaspal from Batala bus stand and when they reached outside Taragarh, they shot him dead and fled with ₹2 lakh he was carrying.

The SSP said accused Baljeet Singh was a graduate and owed 3 acres of agricultur­e land, but a couple of years ago,he went astray and started taking heroin and later started selling heroin.

Accused Kuljeet Singh also confessed his involvemen­t in more than half-a-dozen cases of robbery and snatching in and around the city.
