‘Education must focus on liberal values’
AMRITSAR: Union minister of state for drinking water and sanitation SS Ahluwalia said here on Sunday that extremism has no place in the modern world and education needs to emphasise on liberal values. Describing teachers as ‘nation builders’, he said education of women alone will empower the country and bring it to the level of ‘developed nations'.
He was speaking at the 61st annual convocation of the Khalsa College of Education (KCE) here. He said women of the country will rewrite the history of the `developed, forward looking India'. He said there was need to adopt modern methods of imparting education to meet the challenge of 100% literacy in the country.
“The country is changing and so is the education scenario. The focus is emerging on the girls’ education and IT methods of imparting instruction, which is encouraging,'' the minister said, adding that in the modern era “the teacher need not have a stick in his hand, but a remote control of an internet-enabled smart board”. He congratulated graduates for their achievements and advised degree holders to live up to the expectations of society. He was welcomed by Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC) president Satyajit Singh Majithia, honorary secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina and principal of KCE Dr Jaswinder Singh Dhillon and Guru Nanak Dev University vice-chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu. As many as 692 candidates were awarded degrees at the convocation
Earlier, the minister visited Sri Guru Angad Dev College at Khadoor Sahib in Tarn Taran district for taking part as chief guest in the college’s annual prize distribution function. He was accompanied by member of Parliament (MP) Ranjit Singh Brahmpura. The minister distributed prizes among the students, who brought laurels to the college in different fields.
