With the announcement, model code of conduct is in force in Jalandhar district with immediate effect. The seat fell vacant following the death of SAD MLA Ajit Singh Kohar about three months ago. SAD has already announced Kohar’s son Naib Singh as its candidate.

As both the Congress and AAP have declared their plans to contest the bypoll, all eyes are now on their candidates. Former Congress MLA Jagbir Brar and party spokesperson Navjot Dahiya are also trying hard.

AAP has also initiated the process to select its candidate. It recently suffered a blow when Amarjit Singh Mehatpur, the party candidate in the 2017 assembly polls, joined SAD.HTC
