HISAR: High drama prevailed at the Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology (GJUST), as a university storekeeper allegedly tried self-immolation inside the registrar’s office on Thursday.

The guards present at the office foiled his attempt. Registrar Anil Kumar informed the police about the incident and handed over a complaint against the employee, Ramphal Lohan, for further investigation.

Talking to mediapersons, Ramphal Lohan alleged that he took the extreme step after registrar Kumar stopped his increments. Explaining the incident, the registrar said, “Ramphal Lohan came to my office around 10am with a request letter to consider his increment, which was stopped by the vice-chancellor (V-C), as punishment after he misbehaved with a former deputy registrar.”

“The V-C had kept his matter for consideration at the next executive council body meeting. I took his request letter but he returned to my office again around 12pm with a bottle of kerosene and started pouring it on him. He took out a matchbox. I got up and prevented his bid along with the guards and he started shouting at me,” Anil Kumar added.

Meanwhile, V-C Tankeshwar Kumar told Hindustan Times, “I came to know of the incident but was not available at the university when it happened.”

He further said, “All allegations levelled by the storekeeper are baseless and his record has not been good. He is known to be rude and misbehaved with other staff members from last two or three years. We have written to the police to take action accordingly.”

On the other hand, Lohan told the media that the university authorities were hatching a conspiracy against him by naming him to the police in old cases and stopping his increment, when he had completed all formalities to clear his name. Police are investigating the matter and checking CCTV footage of the registrar’s office. Further action will be taken accordingly.
