MUMBAI: Indrani Mukerjea has sought a divorce from her husband Peter, marking the beginning of the end of a marriage that started with love at first sight, wound its way through business success and failure, and then started breaking down, especially after both partners were accused of being involved in the murder of Indrani’s daughter from a previous marriage, Sheena Bora.

Indrani’s lawyer Edith Dey sent a notice to dissolve the marriage by courier to Peter on April 25. It was couriered after he refused to accept a delivery by hand when in court. Peter and Indrani are both in jail. She was arrested in August 2015, and he, a few months later. “My client states that your marriage is now irretrievably broken down and there is no chance of reconciliation. My client states this fact has been acknowledged by you as well,” reads the notice.

A copy of the notice is in the possession of Hindustan Times.

This isn’t the first time there has been talk of a divorce of the couple. In 2016, Peter Mukerjea’s lawyer told the media that his client was keen to divorce his wife. In January 2017, Indrani Mukerjea’s sought the court’s permission to file for divorce. At the time, this was considered part of the duo’s legal strategy. This is the first time, though, that there’s actual evidence of a divorce notice being sent.

The notice seeks an amicable financial settlement from Peter Mukerjea before April 30 so that the procedure to dissolve the marriage can be initiated. “In view of what is stated above, my client calls upon you to execute agreed amicable financial settlement at the earliest and no later than 30-4-2018, in order to dissolve the marriage between yourselves amicably by mutual consent and put a closure to this chapter once and for all.”

Peter Mukerjea’s lawyer couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

The notice states that “no claims will be made in future with respect to any movable or immovable assets owned or to be owned by the other after passing of the decree of divorce’, and that neither partner will interfere in the other’s life.
