GURUGRAM: Unidentified persons stole a car from Wazirabad village in the wee hours of Saturday and hit an electric pole, damaging it and causing an eight-hour power breakdown in several areas, including sectors 51 and 52, and Samastpur village.

According to the police, eyewitnesses saw two persons getting out of the car and walking away with difficulty. Though the accused have not been identified yet, the police are checking footage from CCTV cameras installed along the route.

Prima facie, it appears that the thieves lost control of the car and rammed into an electric pole, bringing it down and causing an eight-hour-long power breakdown.

Suraj, a security guard and an eyewitness who was sleeping on the pavement, woke up after hearing a thud and saw the electric pole lying on the road. “I woke up after hearing a noise and saw that no streetlight was working. I also saw two men, who seemed to be drunk and were walking with great difficulty, get out of the car and stumble away,” he said.

He said he went back to sleep, assuming that the owner had rammed his car into the pole and was going to get help.

Affected residents, meanwhile, starting calling the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) helpline numbers because of the power breakdown. Linemen soon reached the stretch to check for the fault.

“It was around 5.15am when we reached the electric pole. We saw the car had rammed into the pole after climbing the pavement. The pole was lying on the road, we shifted it to the side to avoid traffic congestion on the stretch,” said Jitender, a lineman of the DHBVN.

“We were repairing the cables when police officials came to inquire about the car. They told us to let them know if the car owner returned,” said Uday, another lineman.

The thieves, estimated to be aged between 30 and 35 years, stole the car parked in front of a house in Wazirabad village, Sector 52, said the police.

The car owners, meanwhile, found out their car had been stolen around 6.30am. They immediately called the police control room and informed police officials about the theft.

“The car had been parked outside the main gate, and we used the rear door in the morning. I realised the car was missing only after I went out after sending my children to school, because my husband had gone walking to drop them. I checked with my neighbours, but no one seemed to know anything, so I called the police control room and informed them of the theft,” said Sangeeta Solanki, the owner of the car.

Head constable Sandeep Kumar of Sector 53 police station, the investigating official said they received a call from the police control room around 6.50 am and rushed to the spot.“When they informed us of the car’s registration number, we realised it was the same car that was damaged in athe accident early morning,” said Kumar.

A case was registered under sections 379 (theft) and 427(causing damage) under the Indian Penal Code against the accused.
