HOSHIARPUR : Taking an initiative to raise the level of primary education in government schools in the state, Punjab industries and commerce minister Sunder Sham Arora will be using his first discretionary grant to start smart classes in around 101 primary schools in the district.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Arora said that 69 schools in the Hoshiarpur constituency and five schools each of other constituencies in the district have been selected for the smart class project.

The project will cost around ₹25 lakh.

“The increase in the dropout rate of students in government schools indicates that government schools lag behind private schools in many respects. To bring them at par, we will have to raise the standard of education in government schools,” said Arora.

“The digital mode of education will make learning easy and interesting for students,” he said.

He said the classes will start within a month as the syllabus and other related material had already been digitised.

Arora said education, health and employment generation are the primary concerns of the government.

“Industrial growth is being given a push and the generation of jobs from industrial development will address the problem of unemployment,” said the industries minister.

Arora revealed that recently MoUs worth ₹1,336 crore were signed to set up more industrial units in the state. He claimed that Hoshiarpur’s Kandi area will witness massive industrial growth.
