ROHTAK : Heena and Naveen of Hisar jointly topped the Class 12 Haryana board exams. The results were announced by the Board of School Education Haryana (BSEH) at a press conference here on Friday.

Both the students are from science stream and secured 491 out of 500 marks to claim the top spot.

In humanities, Gurmeet of Jind bagged the first position by scoring 489 marks, while Monika of Kaithal topped in commerce with 484 marks.

Among the list of 14 meritorious students released by the board, eight are girls and the remaining six boys.

Overall, too, the girl students outshone boys with a big margin. The pass percentage of girl students this time was 72.38%, 15 points higher than boys’ 57.10%.

The delay in announcement of results kept students on tenterhooks. While the board initially maintained that results will be announced by 5 pm on Friday, they were uploaded around 9 pm.

Board chairman Jagbir Singh said they have for the first time introduced digilockers that will keep students’ results and mark sheets safe online on board website, without making them worry in case they lose the hard copies. “Due to the new concept, we are facing a delay in uploading the results,” Singh said.

This is not the first time the BSEH has kept students waiting. Last year, the board had recalled results of Class 10 students after uploading them on website. The new results had changed the toppers. In 2016, the BSEH declared the Class 12 results a day after the announced date.

The overall pass percentage of students this year dropped slightly to 63.84% from last year’s 64.50%. Board officials said 2,22,388 students appeared in the exams, of which 1,41,973 have passed, 49,163 have got compartments and 31,252 have failed. The rural schools performed better than their urban counterparts with a pass percentage of 64.75%, two points higher than 62.04% in urban schools. Pass percentage of government schools and private schools was almost equal at 63.62% and 64.06% respectively.

Among the districts, Rewari and Kaithal performed the best with 72% and 70% of students passing the exams, while Palwal and Mewat performed the worst with pass percentages of 44% and 50%, respectively.

Board secretary Dhirendra Khadgata said that on the basis of the result, those students who wished to apply for re-checking of their answer sheets can apply online with prescribed fee within 20 days from the date of declaration of result. The fee for re-checking would be Rs 800 for candidates belonging to BPL category and Rs 1,000 for candidates belonging to general category. He said that on the basis of result, the private candidates can register for supplementary examination to be held in July 2018 along with a fee of Rs 700 from May 25 to June 13. The registration with a late fee of Rs 100 would be available from June 14 to 18. Similarly, the registration with late fee of Rs 300 would be available from June 19 to 23, and with late fee of Rs 1,000 would be available from June 24 to 30, he added.
