Since the advent of India’s first design institute NID (National Institute of Design) 57 years ago, the scenario of design education in India has witnessed a momentous shift particularly so over the past decade.

Design awareness is growing by leaps and bounds in India as there is an immense scope for the Design sector to flourish in our country.

In next two years, India’s design industry is expected to reach Rs 188.32 billion with an annual requirement of nearly 62000 qualified designers across different design domains. Thus, employment opportunities for students for design graduates and postgraduates are likely to multiply in number. A degree in design is now considered as an attractive career opportunity for students.

One of the most important clusters is that of industrial or product design. Other specializations like toy design, accessory design, and transportation design are essentially a part of this cluster. Industrial design sector in India is expected to reach Rs 110 billion in another two years. Various streams of design education will teach you how to design or improve a broad array of industrial products ranging from automobiles, home appliances, toys, games, and consumer durables, to mobile phones, furniture, storage units, medical instruments, helmets, construction aids, and much more. Another well known cluster is that of courses offered around the fashion industries. A report released by ASSOCHAM in 2012 revealed that India’s designer wear industry is expected to go beyond Rs 11,000 crore mark by 2020. If you are interested in consumer lifestyle, you should opt for a career in fashion design.
