Pregnant woman dies in hospital, kin block highway

JAMMU: Enraged over the death of a pregnant woman, kin blocked Jammu Pathankot nationalhi­ghway at Kathua, accusing doctor of negligence and demanding his arrest.

The condition of Naina Devi, a resident of Kathua, deteriorat­ed after her caesarean section in district hospital in Kathua on Tuesday morning. The doctors referred her to SMGS hospital in Jammu, but she died enroute Jammu hospital, around 80km from Kathua.

One of the relatives of deceased Naina Devi said, “Naina who was nine-months pregnant was regularly coming to district hospital, Kathua for check-up. On Monday evening, after her check-up, gynecologi­st Dr Rommy, found everything okay and told us to return in the morning for delivery. We came to hospital in the morning and at around 10:30am, she was taken to operation theatre. At that time, she was absolutely fine.”

“After half-an-hour, doctors informed us that she has complicati­ons and referred her to a hospital in Jammu. We were shocked to see her condition as she was finding it difficult to breath. When we reached Jammu, doctors told us that she died around an hour back,” she added. She alleged, “Naina was given overdose of anesthesia, which took her life. After finding that she could collapse anytime, they referred her to Jammu.” Officers from police and administra­tion rushed to the spot and assured magisteria­l inquiry and lodging of the FIR against the doctor. However, the kin demanded the arrest of the doctor.
