KARNAL: The Yamunanagar police on Wednesday arrested the accused in the rape and murder case of the six-year-old girl, four days after her body was found at a farmhouse in Balegarh village of the district with her throat slit and blood on private parts.

The accused has been identified as 34-year-old Devi Singh, a resident of Bhainsla village of Jaisalmer district in Rajasthan, who worked as an assistant to a veterinary doctor at a local stud farm. He was arrested from Khizrabad in Yamunanagar.

HARROWING DETAILS COME TO THE FORE

Yamunanagar superintendent of police (SP) Rajesh Kalia said, “During the interrogation, the accused told that he was under the influence of alcohol when he had abducted the girl on June 2 and taken her to a deserted place.”

“As she was crying, the accused administered her a tranquilliser used to sedate horses following which, she fell unconscious,” the SP added.

“He then left her at the spot and went back to his room. But he returned to the site again around 8pm, and this time, with a knife,” Kalia said.

“Before killing her by slitting her throat, he raped her thrice and dumped the body in a pit,” he added.

Kalia said he later also injured himself and got admitted to a private clinic to divert police attention.

“But the police managed to recover a syringe at the spot and during the investigation, it was found that Devi Singh has raped and murdered the girl.”

The SP said there was no criminal background of the accused.

The victim was the daughter of a labourer, who belongs to Jharkhand, and worked at the farmhouse of former minister and Congress leader Nirmal Singh.

The police have booked the accused under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Devi Singh will be produced in the court on Thursday.
