JAMMU/RUPNAGAR: An army jawan died under mysterious circumstances at a forward post in Poonch on Monday.

The deceased Ranjot Singh, 24, a gunner from the 278 field regiment, was a resident of Chamkaur Sahib, Rupnagar district in Punjab. A police official said it appeared to be a case of suicide. “He used his official weapon and pumped a bullet into his chest, causing his instant death,” he said. “On hearing the gunshot, other jawans rushed to the spot and found Singh lying in a pool of blood,” he added.

An army officer said a court of inquiry has been initiated.

‘HAD STRAINED RELATIONS WITH WIFE’

Ranjot reportedly had strained relations with his wife.

As per information, he had got married seven months ago and it was learnt that during his latest leave, he got suspicious of wife talking to someone on her mobile phone. Due to dispute between Ranjot and his wife, his in-laws took his wife to her paternal house and Ranjot returned to his unit on completion of his leave. His in-laws had, however, filed a police complaint against him alleging that he used to thrash his wife.

Meanwhile, Ranjot’s father Gurmukh Singh on Tuesday filed a complaint against his daughterin-law with Rupnagar SSP, who has marked the same to the Chamkaur Sahib DSP.
