36 HELD FOR SPREADING RUMOURS
GUWAHATI : At least 36 people so far have been arrested across Assam for spreading rumours about child-lifting gangs and hate messages on social media platforms in the aftermath of the brutal lynching of two men in Karbi Anglong last week, Assam police said on Tuesday.
More than 70 people were allowed to go after making them delete their objectionable posts, police said, adding most of the arrested are aged under 30.
Police have arrested 25 people, believed to be the lynchers, and six in Karbi Anglong for recording and circulating the murderous act.
“We have been receiving a lot of support from people who are coming forward with scans from the social media sites about objectionable posts,” a senior police officer said on the condition of anonymity.
