ROHTAK: The Rewari Government Railway Police (GRP) have arrested a woman for stealing a two-year-old baby from the railway station.

The police said accused Geeta Devi abducted the baby for a childless man identified as Rohtash Kumar of Rewari, who offered her Rs 20,000 for the work. Rohtash has also been arrested by the police.

The GRP police said an Ajmer family waiting for a train back home was spending the night at the railway station on Monday. When the family woke up, they found their two-year-old daughter missing. A search was launched at the railway station, but no clue could be found. Most of the CCTV cameras installed at the station were dysfunctional and could not trace the missing child.

On Tuesday night, however, a cop saw the accused woman holding a baby at the railway station and followed her on suspicion. On interrogation, she confessed that she had abducted the baby for a man who had offered her Rs 20,000.

“Geeta was asked to bring a baby boy by Rohtash. However, she mistakenly abducted a girl. When they found out about the baby’s gender, Rohtash did not accept the baby and asked Geeta to return the girl to her family. She came to railway station and planned to leave the baby somewhere in dark, but was caught by our policeman,” GRP SHO Ranbir Malik said. Later, the police also arrested Rohtash from his Rewari residence. The SHO said the accused were produced in a local court on Wednesday, which sent them to judicial custody.
