ROHTAK: A 60-year-old Sikh truck driver from Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir was murdered by his helper in Rohtak, the police said on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Nirmal Singh.

The police said Singh’s burnt body was found from the fields of Singhpura village in the district on June 9. It took four days for the cops to ascertain his identity.

During investigations, it was found that Singh was murdered by his helper Bajrangi of Sonepat over a petty quarrel related to taking wrong turn on road.

The police said on June 7, Singh and Bajrangi were going back to Jammu on their truck after loading some steel material from a factory in Jaipur.

When they reached Rohtak, Singh expressed his desire to sleep and handed over the wheel of the truck to Bajrangi. However, while Singh was asleep, Bajrangi took the wrong turn towards Hisar instead of Jind. “After about 60 km on the wrong route, Singh woke up and found they were going in the wrong direction.

He scolded his helper for taking the wrong route and asked him to take U-turn towards Rohtak again.

The scolding led to heated exchanges between the two and Bajrangi picked up a metallic tool and banged on Singh’s head, killing him on spot,” Rohtak Sadar police station in-charge Maqsood Ahmed said.

He said after killing Singh, his helper wrapped him in a blanket and set it on fire after throwing him in the fields of Singhpura village. The accused was arrested from his house in Sonepat and will be produced in a court on Friday, he said.
