AMRITSAR: Three notorious gangsters of Punjab — Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, Sonu Kangla and Bobby Malhotra — have confessed to killing Congress councillor Pehalwan Gurdeep Singh in the Gol Bagh area of the city on June 1.

The police had taken the trio, lodged in different jails of the state, under various cases of murder, extortion, robbery etc, on remand. The police said they have now arrested the trio for the murder of the councillor also.

The three were among the eight accused, who were booked by the police after the murder of the councillor.

Deputy commissioner of police (DCP-investigation) Jagmohan Singh, confirming the development, said, “During the police remand, the trio confessed that they had made the plan to kill the councillor to take revenge of Sangam Malhotra’s death. They told the police that one of their gang’s members Karan Masti with his aides killed Gurdeep on June 1.”

Sangam Malhotra was shot dead in 2014. His body was found in the Gujjarpura area of Amritsar. Sangam is the brother of gangster Bobby Malhotra. Three days after the councillor’s murder, a Facebook post surfaced, which named four people, including Karan Masti, reportedly belonging to the Jaggu gang, that ‘killed’ Gurdeep. The Facebook status, however, was posted from the page of Sangam Malhotra.

The Facebook post also mentioned: “In 2014, our younger brother Sangam Malhotra was murdered and Gurdeep Pehalwan had been taking the responsibility that he got Sangam killed. Gurdeep was not booked by the police as he had political support, but he was a gangster. Hariya and Ginda, who were killed by us, were also gangsters and they had the support of Gurdeep. We had then taken a pledge to kill all those who killed Sangam and who had taken responsibility for his murder.”

The DCP said efforts were being made to arrest Karan Masti and his aides also who were also allegedly in the killing of the councillor.
