MC demolishes five Jalandhar shops

JALANDHAR : The municipal corporatio­n continued its drive against illegal constructi­on in the city on Saturday and demolished five shops near the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) and a commercial complex in the Green Model Town area here.

The demolition team, comprising officials of the building branch of the MC, PWD (B&R) and the police, had to face tough resistance from shopkeeper­s and locals in the area, who held a protest against the demolition. The situation became tense when the mob started scuffling with team members, especially the cops.

The team, however, succeeded in demolishin­g the structure.

Chief vigilance officer (CVO) of the local bodies department Sudip Singh Manik has prepared a schedule and set up three teams of officials to demolish illegal colonies and buildings at various parts of the city as ordered by local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu.

During his day-long inspection on Thursday, Sidhu had inspected over 35 illegal buildings and suspended eight building branch officials for derelictio­n of duty.

“We are taking action against illegal constructi­on according to building bylaws. The structures meant to be demolished are being razed,” said MC commission­er Basant Garg. “During the past two days, we have demolished around nine illegal buildings and sealed a few structures,” the MC commission­er added.
