Punjab Cong stalwart Singla dies, holiday in govt offices today

CHANDIGARH/NEW DELHI : Former Punjab finance minister Surinder Singla died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here on Thursday. According to family sources, Singla, 78, breathed his last around 6 am following multiple medical complicati­ons. He was rushed to AIIMS at 4 am after he complained of breathless­ness.

Singla was a senior state Congress leader and belonged to Samana town in Patiala district.

A former Rajya Sabha member from Punjab, Singla last represente­d the Bathinda assembly constituen­cy and was Punjab’s finance minister during the previous Congress government of Captain Amarinder Singh.

Singla’s cremation would take place at the Lodhi Crematoriu­m at 11 am on Friday. Amarinder described Singla’s demise as a big loss for the Congress. As a mark of respect to the departed soul, the chief minister declared a holiday on Friday in all government offices.

WASHINGTON: Amul Thapar, an Indian-American legal luminary, is among the 25 shortliste­d judges US President Donald Trump could nominate to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, according to American media reports.

Justice Kennedy ,81, announced his retirement from the US Supreme Court on Wednesday.

He met Trump at the White House last afternoon .

Thapar, 49, is one of the 25 shortliste­d judges on Trump’s Supreme Court list.

Trump told reporters that his nominee to replace Judge Kennedy would be from this list compiled by the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society.
