LONDON: Andy Murray has withdrawn from Wimbledon on the eve of the tournament after the two-time champion decided he wasn’t fit enough to compete at the All England Club.

Murray had just returned to action after 11 months on the sidelines due to a hip injury that needed surgery in January.

“It’s with regret I’m withdrawing from Wimbledon,” Murray said in a statement on Sunday.

Murray was due to play France’s Benoit Paire in the first round on Tuesday, but he had admitted on Sunday morning that there was a chance he could pull out if his body didn’t feel right.

Just hours later, Murray dropped a bombshell, ending his hopes of adding another Wimbledon crown to those he collected in 2013 and 2016.

The 31-year-old Scot had played just three matches since making his comeback last month.

NO TIME TO GO DOWN MEMORY LANE: NADAL

LONDON: Ten years older, 10 years more battle-weary and injuryhardened and with a decade’s worth of extra silverware, Rafael Nadal returns to the scene of his most epic triumph against Roger Federer still believing he can reawaken his Wimbledon best.

Yet amid all the fond reminiscing about the anniversary of the 2008 final, with Nadal’s five-set victory still seen as the sport’s finest match, Spain’s world No.1 was in no mood to stroll down memory lane at the All England Club on Saturday.

“Today, I see that (match as) like a long time ago,” Nadal told reporters, adding with a smile: “But the good thing is I still here. I am happy for that.”
