There are limited job opportunities in forensic science as most jobs are with the government labs

My query is about a humanities student who has a Bachelor’s degree in political science and a Master’s in international relations firm a top university. i would like to know the career options available for this candidate.

Political science is an excellent discipline in the social sciences best suited for students interested in learning how groups of people govern themselves, how policies are made, and how we can improve our government policies at the local, state, national, and international levels.

International relations (IR) is closely linked to political science and provides an understanding of the complex and changing issues that underlie world affairs and an appreciation of the issues which link governments, businesses, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and pressure groups.

A degree in IR after graduation in political science can, therefore, open up a range of careers in areas such as the civil services, particularly the foreign and diplomatic services, with public sector organisations, both national and international, multilateral and intergovernmental organizations, in the international office of universities and colleges, manufacturing and commercial companies, financial institutions, law firms, publishing companies and media organizations.

A combination of IR and political science is also meaningful if you are looking to work with international organizations such as the United Nations, and its agencies, and voluntary, charitable and campaigning organisations such as Amnesty International, Oxfam, Greenpeace and others.

Most will normally require relevant work experience, and sometimes other relevant professional qualifications and some substantive expertise in a particular area, such as environment protection, education, development studies, labour laws, communication and so on.

i am enrolled in a Bsc programme in life science and want to do an Msc in forensic science or biochemistry but many of my seniors are telling me that there is no scope in either of the courses. The jobs are limited and tuition fees of these courses are high. hence, my friends have been asking me to prepare for the SSC or UPSC exams. i am confused. please help.

There are limited job opportunities in forensic science as the work is mostly as a forensic pathologist, or analyst handling forensic investigations.

Most jobs in India are with government forensic labs which are limited, and with investigative agencies such as CBI, IB, RAW and so on for which candi- dates from the police service are normally recruited.

However after a BSc life sciences degree, you can take up M Sc in any number of specialized fields such as pharmacy, paramedical sciences as well as those leading to openings in chemical and allied industries such as agrochemicals, petrochemicals, toiletries, plastics, polymers, in the manufacture and processing of food and beverage products as also those in the energy - oil, gas, and power sectors.

If you are interested in research, a career as a clinical laboratory technologist involves performing lab tests on microorganisms, bacteria, and viruses, while a job as a research assistant can offer an opportunity to work in a laboratory setting in a support role.

Alternatively, pharmaceutical sales representatives combine their knowledge of medical drugs and treatments with their interpersonal skills to generate sales for pharmaceutical companies.

If you are interested in the food services you can specialize in nutrition & dietetics to work as dieticians in hospitals, diet consultants / counsellors in lifestyle clinics, freelance dieticians, food demonstrators, as also in hotels and the food industry, in food preservation, as scientists in research institutions, nutrition experts in international organizations and quality control inspectors.

Clinical research is another field which is possible and involves the testing of various medical formulations on different kinds of patients. Career prospects in the clinical research industry include working as a clinical investigator, or in drug development with a pharmaceutical lab, hospital or clinical research organization.

i am 22years old and currently pursuing CA (final). At this juncture, i want to pursue some additional course but i am not interested in doing Cs/MBA. i have an interest in stock markets. Could you please suggest some additional courses which will be useful for me in the long run.

If you are good with accounts and pursuing CA finals, then you can really take up any course leading to careers related to numbers and accounting, such as banking and finance, capital markets, wealth management, stock markets, cost accountancy (from ICWA), stock broking or MBA.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) conducts accounting and financial management courses as part of their continuing education and professional development programme.

Students who have passed Entrance Examination or Foundation Examination or Professional Education (Examination-I) are eligible for enrolment to the Accounting Technician Course.

Accounting technicians can work in the accounts and finance departments supporting a CA and associate CAs, and the ICAI assists students in placements. Another option is a PG diploma in banking will enable you to work in the banking sector, and in tax management, with a knowledge and understanding of tax accounting, tax software and tax collection methods and procedures.

There a number of different courses leading to jobs in the share market and include those in currency derivatives, mutual funds, and securities operations, among others.

The institutes offering these programmes include the Mumbai Stock Exchange training Institute, the National Stock Exchange, the Institute of Capital Markets Development , New Delhi, National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) set up by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)’s , Indian Institute of Capital Markets, Mumbai , and several others.
