KARNAL: In an attempt to go for an image makeover, the All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (AIJASS) is now reaching out to the members of other communities to disseminate a message of social harmony in the state.

The Jat body is holding district-level ‘Chhattis Biradari Bhaichara Sammelans’ in which they are inviting members of all communities and seeking their support to oppose the politicians who are allegedly trying to divide the people on the caste basis. “We are holding districtlevel Bhaichara meetings in which members of all 36 communities are urged to counter the politicians who want to divide the people,” said AIJASS leader Balwan Kotra of Kaithal.

He said a state-level meeting of AIJASS will be organised in Rohtak on August 12, where the future course of action for Jat agitation will be decided.

Another AIJASS leader Baldev Rathee from Kurukshetra said the Bhaichara Sammelans are the need of the hour as the politicians of the ruling party had defamed the Jats after the violence in February 2016.

“It (the violence) was an attempt to divide Jats and nonJats, especially Punjabis as their properties were targeted during the violence, but now we are trying to give a message of unity by inviting members of all communities at one stage,” he added. They alleged with a view to dividing the people on the caste lines, a CBI chargesheet has been filed recently and 51 people, including several AIJASS leaders, have been named for their alleged involvement in loot and arson at finance minister Capt Abhimanyu’s house during the Jat stir in February 2016.

They said through this chargesheet, the BJP government is trying to divide Jats and nonJats to get political mileage in the coming elections.

The AIJASS has also decided to boycott BJP leaders and their programmes after August 15.

“Under this campaign, AIJASS members will visit the entire state and appeal the people, especially of Jat community, not to attend the rallies and programmes of BJP leaders in the coming elections,” said an AIJAS leader, on the condition of anonymity.

AIJASS president Yashpal Malik has also alleged that the CBI is working under pressure of Capt Abhimanyu and that is why AIJASS national general secretary Ashok Balhara has been named in the chargesheet.
