CHANDIGARH: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued summons to former Ferozepur range inspector general (IG), Gurinder Dhillion, to join investigation in a bribe case.

This was after the CBI counsel told the court, during the hearing on remand for an accused, that despite being issued a summon previously, the cop, who is now IG (human rights), had failed to appear.

The summons were sent under section 160 of the Criminal Code of Procedure (CrPC) (recording of statement) for the second time now, after it was returned as undelivered the first time, the counsel added.

In other development, the police remand of middleman Ashok Goyal, who the CBI had arrested last week for allegedly accepting bribe on the behalf of the IG was extended by two days. The CBI had sought fourday remand, pleading that it needed to confront Goyal with its witnesses.

Ayush Bhalla, one of the two witnesses of the CBI, also recorded his statement before the chief judicial magistrate amidst high drama.

Family and friends of Bhalla and the second witness, Satyadev Jindal, had raised a hue and cry saying that the CBI had kept them in its custody, even though they had not been arrested.

Bhalla’s statement was recorded under section 164 of the CrPC, while Jindal will record his statement on Tuesday. Jindal’s family also alleged that CBI was torturing their ward.

The family even misbehaved with the CBI sleuths. At one

point in time, cops had to enter the court room of the CBI judge to ensure peace was maintained. All this happened in open court.

This was followed by heated argument between the counsel for one of the witnesses and cops. Finally, a daily diary report (DDR) for manhandling was registered at the Sector 36 police station on a complaint from CBI officials.

After an application was moved by the witnesses, it was resolved that apart from the CBI counsel, no one else will accompany the witnesses to court. Sources said the CBI turned the duo into witnesses as the exchange of bribe money had taken place in front of them and they had mentioned that the money was to be forwarded to the IG.
