JALANDHAR: A team of vigilance bureau (VB) here on Tuesday caught a private agent accepting a bribe of ₹5,000 for rectifying name and date of birth on birth certificate.

The superintendent of the birth and death certificate branch at civil hospital was also arrested later.

The accused, Thomas, is a private agent outside the Civil Hospital where Nirmal Singh is a superintendent.

The action was initiated on the complaint of Sukhdev Singh, who said Thomas and Nirmal Singh had demanded ₹15,000 bribe to rectify his name on the birth certificate.

“Thomas had taken ₹10,000 in advance while ₹5,000 were to be given after the work was done,” he said.

Jalandhar VB senior superintendent of police Daljinder Singh Dhillon said the vigilance team along with government officials, as witnesses, laid a trap and caught Thomas redhanded while accepting a bribe of ₹5,000 from the complainant.

“Nirmal Singh, with an intention of taking bribe, instead of delivering the rectified birth certificate to Sukhdev Singh handed over it to a private agent which shows his involvement in the crime. Both the agents have been arrested,” he added.

A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. HTC
