LOOKING BACK
1981 Sep 20: Damdami Taksal chief Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale arrested in Amritsar, 13 supporters killed in police firing.
Sep 29: Five activists associated with the extremist Dal Khalsa hijack Air India flight (IC-423) from New Delhi to Srinagar and force it to land in Lahore, to protest against Bhindranwale’s arrest. The same day, an FIR is registered at Palam airport police station.
Sep 30: They are arrested by Pakistan police.
1985 March: Trial starts in Punjab, Pakistan, against them.
1986 Jan 20: All are sentenced to life by the Pakistan court.
1994 Nov: They are released, asked to leave Pakistan within three months.
1995 February: Two of them, Karan Singh and Jasbir Singh, get asylum in Switzerland. Satnam Singh and Tejinderpal Singh denied asylum in United States and Canada, respectively. Gajinder Singh decides to stay back Pakistan.
1997 December, : Tejinderpal Singh deported to India.
1999 August : Satnam Singh returns, surrenders in Delhi.
2000 February, : Satnam Singh discharged because he already served a life term in Pakistan.
August: Tejinderpal Singh seeks similar discharge.
2007 January, : The trial court asks Delhi Police to respond to queries.
2011 After a four-year investigation, Delhi Police charges Satnam and Tejinderpal with waging war against the state and sedition.
2012 Both move Delhi high court.
2017 May, : The high court refuses to quash the fresh charges.
2018 May, : Charges framed against both, sedition clause dropped.
August: Both are acquitted.
