AMRITSAR: The special task force (STF) on Wednesday claimed to have busted a racket of heroin smuggling being run by a woman inmate from Faridkot jail through her mobile phone, with the arrest of a man with 1 kg heroin from Tarn Taran district.

The accused has been identified as Davinder Kumar alias Lovely, a resident of Moga. However, one of his accomplices, identified as Satpal Singh of Moga, managed to flee the spot.

Addressing a press conference here, STF (border range) assistant inspector general (AIG) Rashpal Singh said the two accused were on their way to smuggle the contraband in Tarn Taran district. They had to deliver the drug as per the instructions of Satpal’s wife Simarjit Kaur, who is lodged in Faridkot jail, and runs the racket from there.

The AIG said, “An STF team, led by inspector Sukhwinder Singh Randhawa, was patrolling on Tarn Taran-Patti road on Tuesday evening.”

He said the team started checking vehicles. “The accused came on a Honda Activa scooter (bearing registration number PB-29-Z-7469). When the police stopped them, Satpal fled the spot while Davinder was nabbed. When the team searched the scooter, they recovered 1 kg heroin from it.”

The AIG said, “During interrogation, Davinder told the police that he and Satnam were on way to smuggle the heroin to Patti, as per Simarjit instructions.” “We have registered a case under Sections 21, 25, 29, 61, 85 of NDPSAct against the trio.,” he added.
