KARNAL: At least 1,300 non-teaching employees of the Kurukshetra University (KU) went on an indefinite strike on Wednesday, thus paralysing the administrative work on the varsity campus.

The university had already announced the imposition of ‘No-Work-No-Pay’ for the protesting employees, but they still decided to go on the strike.

This is the third such strike by these officials in the past eight months.

The decision of the strike was taken after a meeting between representatives of Kurukshetra University Non-Teaching Employees’ Association (KUNTEA) and vice-chancellor KC Sharma.

The protesters have been demanding the release of arrears as per the 7th pay commission recommendations and LTC allowance, besides promotion of class-4 employees and clerks appointed under the selffinance scheme.

On Wednesday, the members of the association gathered outside the administrative block and staged their protest.

However, the authorities of the cash-strapped university said they cannot release the arrears amounting to ₹10 crore until the varsity gets the funds from the government.

Meanwhile, the V-C has reportedly refused to accept their other demands saying the promotions could only be given as per the set guidelines and educational qualification.

KC Sharma said most of their demands were already under consideration and the repeated protests were harmful for the reputation of the university.

The V-C said varsity has already taken up the issue of pending arrears with the government and it will be disbursed as soon as the government sends the money.
