‘Security lapse’: Vigil in Hisar takes a hit as 41 CCTV cameras lie defunct

HISAR: Installed last year, the 41 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the city are lying defunct for the past five months, reportedly due to lack of maintenance, thus compromising the extra security these provided.

As many as 41 high resolution, night vision and extra zoom CCTV cameras were installed at 13 different locations in the city on April 29, 2017 in an attempt to increase the vigil against crime, especially during night hours.

Member of parliament from Hisar, Dushyant Chautala, had inaugurated the CCTV control room at Hisar’s superintendent of police (SP) office last year.

He had given ₹15 lakh for the purpose from the member of parliament local area development (MPLAD) fund, while the maintenance task was assigned to the local civic body.

SP Shiv Charan has now written to the deputy commissioner, Ashok Kumar Meena, and the Hisar municipal corporation to look into the matter of the nonfunctioning cameras.

“CCTV cameras play an important role in crime investigations, especially identification. I was informed about the issue as soon as I assumed the charge. We have asked the authorities to fix the cameras at the earliest,” the SP said.

“I have also requested the DSP (law and order), who is the nodal officer, to write to the departments concerned regarding the issue,” he added.

As per the sources, battery back-up and lack of proper maintenance are the core reasons behind the non-operational CCTV cameras.
