AMRITSAR : A court on Thursday acquitted notorious gangster Jagdeep Singh alias Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and his aide Mandeep Singh in the murder case of rival gangster Sanjiv Nayyar alias Babba.

The court of additional district judge VK Goyal acquitted Jaggu as the prosecution failed to prove its case and present evidence, said his counsel Amandeep Singh. His family members and key witnesses had retracted their statements during the trial.

Babba, a member of the Jagtar Boxer gang, was gunned down by some assailants on September 28, 2014, night when he was out on parole.

He was serving life imprisonment in the Amritsar central jail in connection with the killing of gangster Raju Chikna. He was attacked when he, his wife and son were returning home in an SUV after attending a wedding near Majitha Road bypass.

JAGGU WAS AN AIDE OF CHIKNA

A case of murder was registered against unknown persons the next day on complaint of the deceased’s son, Raghav Nayyar. Jaggu’s name was added to the first information report (FIR) later on. He was arrested from the Majitha area eight months after the murder.

At present, Jaggu is lodged in the Faridkot central jail and is facing more than 45 cases of including murder, attempt to murder and drug peddling among others.

Mandeep is in the Nabha jail. Jaggu and his aides Karan Masti and Bobby Malhotra were also booked for the murder of Pehlwan Gurdeep Singh, Congress councillor from ward 50 in Amritsar, on June 2 this year.
