NEW DELHI: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will provide former Jammu and Kashmir governor NN Vohra round-theclock protection as a central government protectee following a threat perception analysis, officials familiar with the development said.

Vohra’s second tenure as the state’s governor ended on August 21. Satya Pal Malik has since replaced him.

“CRPF has been asked to make arrangements for providing security to Vohra round-theclock at his place of residence and also while he is on the move. Formal orders are expected soon in this regard,” said an official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Vohra, a former bureaucrat, refused to comment while saying he had been under protection for the last 20 years.

He was prime minister IK Gujral’s principal secretary from July 1997 to March 1998. He was appointed as Jammu and Kashmir governor in 2008 and remained under the state government’s protection until leaving office.

“Security agencies did a threat perception analysis with regard to Vohra and, being the former governor of a terrorismaffected state, it was decided to provide him with a CRPF protection ring,” said the official quoted above. The official added that Vohra is likely to be provided with Z or the highest Z Plus category protection.

The Centre provides security to around 500 top politicians and bureaucrats as central government protectees. The respective state governments have their own lists of protectees.

The security is provided under two categories –positional and threat-based. The positional security is provided to a person on the basis the position he or she holds. Under the second category, security is provided on the basis of threat a person faces following a threat perception analysis.

CRPF provides security to 75 people, including top politicians such Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah and the Centre’s special representative for Jammu and Kashmir, Dineshwar Sharma.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) , the Border Security Force (BSF) and the counter-terror commando force, National Security Guard (NSG), provide security to the rest of the central government protectees. The Delhi police, too, provide security to some central protectees.

THE SECURITY IS PROVIDED UNDER TWO CATEGORIES – POSITIONAL AND THREATBASED; VOHRA WILL BE PROVIDED COVER UNDER THE LATTER CATEGORY
