2 arrested with 5-kg charas

JALANDHAR: The rural police arrested two persons with five kilograms of charas from their possession, in Bhogpur on Sunday.

The duo, identified as Gurdial Singh alias Bagga and Karnail Singh are residents of Nakodar.

Senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Navjot Singh Mahal said that following a tip-off, a police team from Bhogpur led by station house officer (SHO) Surjit Singh conducted an inspection.

The police also impounded the auto-rickshaw, from which the drugs were recovered. “The accused have been smuggling charas in Punjab after purchasing it from Himachal,” he said.

A case has been registered under Sections 20, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrop­ic Substances (NDPS) Act at Bhogpur police station.

TANZANIAN WOMAN HELD WITH HEROIN

The rural police arrested a Tanzanian national on charges of smuggling heroin in Punjab, here on Sunday.

The woman identified as Dorin Edson Nejuda, a native of Tanzania and currently residing at Vikaspuri in Delhi, has been smuggling heroin in state on a large scale, police said. The accused was produced before a judicial magistrate and remanded to three-day police custody.

Senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Navjot Singh Mahal, said that they received a tip-off about a Tanzanian woman coming to Jalandhar to deliver a drug consignmen­t.

Following the informatio­n, a police team led by station house officer (SHO) Maqsudan Raman Kumar carried out a check at the Bidhipur crossing.

“A Tanzanian woman de-boarding a bus at the crossing raised suspicions. The team recovered 500-gm heroin from her handbag during the checking,” Mahal said.

“More revelation­s about the drug supply chain are expected,” Mahal added. A case has been registered under Section 21 of the NDPS Act at Maqsudan police station.
