KARNAL:Hundreds of residents of Shekhpura village at Indri block of Karnal district were evacuated as flood water entered the village following a 100 feet breach in the Western Yamuna Canal on late Sunday evening.

The district administration sounded alert in nearby villages of Hinori, Dhanokheri and Dhanora as water could reach these villages late at night.

Karnal deputy commissioner (DC) Aditya Dahiya, who was on the spot said, “All village residents and livestock were evacuated and there was no loss to life.”

He said the breach was big and it would take some time to plug it, but the flow of water had already receded. He said the rescue teams were on alert and would work the entire night.

As per the officials, the water will cause huge loss to farmers as thousands of acres of standing paddy, sugarcane, maize and vegetables were submerged due to the flood.

“The crops are under water. We can only shift our families,” said Ishwar Sharma of Henori village.

However, officials in the district administration said the water could spread to nearby villages by Monday morning, adding that the flow could be controlled only at Dadupur in Yamunanagar district, around 70 km from the breach.
