CHANDIGARH: Haryana Congress MLAs on Friday accused assembly speaker Kanwar Pal of not being neutral and objective in ordering the year-long suspension of Palwal MLA Karan Singh Dalal.

In a memorandum submitted to governor Satyadeo Narayan Arya, party MLAs led by former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, said the suspension of Dalal was illegal, unjust and arbitrary. “The speaker ostensibly acted under undue the pressure of the state government,’’ the Congress MLAs alleged.

Dalal was suspended on September 11 for a year from sittings of the assembly by the speaker after heated exchanges with leader of the opposition Abhay Singh Chautala.

The Congress MLAs urged the governor to advise the speaker to rescind the order of suspension. The punishment inflicted upon Dalal was unmerited, unwarranted, unjust and excessive, the memorandum said.

Later at a press conference, Hooda said the BJP government has lost the confidence of the masses. “The law and order situation is worsening with each passing day. A sense of insecurity and fear prevailed in the minds of the people. The writ of the criminals runs large in the state. The recent Rewari rape case bore testimony to the sad state of affairs. Prompt, strict and effective action is issing altogether when a crime takes place,’’ Hooda said.
