India defeat Vietnam in AFC U-16 C’ship

KUALA LUMPUR: Skipper Vikram Singh converted a penalty in the 86th minute as India started their AFC U-16 Championsh­ip campaign with a 1-0 win over Vietnam at Stadium Sains Sukan UM Arena here on Friday. In a tightly contested game, India were awarded the penalty when Vikram was brought down inside the penalty box with seven minutes left in the game. The Bibiano Fernandes-coached side will next face Iran on Monday.

INDIA U-16 GIRLS LOSE

ULAANBAATA­R: Battling extremely cold weather, the India team Friday went down fighting 2-1 to hosts Mongolia in the AFC U-16 Women’s Championsh­ip Qualifiers here.

Following the result, India relinquish­ed pole position in group B to Laos, who are three points ahead, having played the same number of matches.

Laos have garnered nine points from three matches, while India are three points behind. They are slated to face off in the final group fixture on Sunday.

Meanwhile, a win against Laos will be enough for India to advance to the second round of qualificat­ion, owing to better head-to-head record.

BOXING C’SHIPS IN NOV

NEW DELHI: The World Women’s Boxing Championsh­ips, to be hosted by India after more than a decade, will be held from November 15 in the national capital.

The teams will have to be in New Delhi by November 13, with the competitio­n starting a couple of days later.

The marquee tournament was last held in India in 2006 and remains the best for the country in terms of performanc­e. India had topped the medal tally with four gold, three silver and one bronze medal.

The celebrated M C Mary Kom, who has been nicknamed ‘Magnificen­t Mary’ by the AIBA, will be gunning for a sixth world title at the event which would conclude with the finals on November 24. She won successive gold medals in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010 editions.

TRNAVA (SLOVAKIA): India wrestler Naveen Sihag shocked defending champion Daton Duain Fix 5-4 to progress to the 57kg gold medal bout on the opening day of the men’s free style competitio­n at the junior world wrestling championsh­ip while Mansi grabbed a bronze in the women’s 57kg here on Friday. Sihag will now clash with Russia’s Akhmed Idrisov to become world champion.

KOVILOVO: India’s young table tennis players extended their purple patch on the internatio­nal stage, clinching two silver and three bronze medals in the 2018 Serbian Junior and Cadet Open here on Friday. Deepit Patil-Anukram Jain and Radhapriya Goel-Anusha Kutumbale emerged as the stars, winning silver in the junior boys’ doubles and the junior girls’ doubles categories respective­ly. Diya Chitale-Swastika Ghosh also excelled in the junior girls’ doubles category, claiming bronze. Manush Shah was the sole individual to pick up two medals, one along with Raegan Albuquerqu­e in the junior boys’ doubles and the other in the junior boys’ singles event.
