JALANDHAR: Family members and relatives of senior politicians in the Doaba region, who contested zila parishad elections, registered victory with comfortable margins in their respective seats.

Many senior leaders of both the ruling Congress and the opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had fielded their kith and kin in the rural polls, the results of which were declared on Saturday evening.

Former SAD minister Bibi Jagir Kaur had fielded her daughter Ranjeet Kaur from the Nangal Lubana zila parishad (ZP) in Bholath constituency, who won the seat with 636 votes against Congress candidate Surjit Kaur.

Jagir Kaur had contested the last five assembly elections from Bholath and was elected thrice. In 2017 elections, she was defeated by Aam Aadmi Party’s Sukhpal Singh Khaira, who was earlier in the Congress.

AAP rebel leader Khaira did not field or support any candidate in the zila parishad polls.

Maninderjit Singh Mani, son-in-law of Ramanjit Sikki, Congress MLA from Khadoor Sahib, won zila parishad elections in Ramidi with a margin of 6,087 votes against SAD leader Sukhjit Singh. This zone also comes under Bholath constituency.

Mehtab Singh, son of former Congress MLA Kawaljit Singh Lally, won the zila parishad polls from Patara with a margin of 2,246 votes, defeating Akali Dal candidate Lakhbir Singh. Patara falls under Adampur constituency wherein SAD MLA Pawan Kumar Tinu aggressively campaigned for party candidates.

Rana Bhawar, son of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) general secretary Rana Kuldeep Singh, also registered a comfortable victory in the Daulatpur zila parishad falling in Nawanshahr constituency.

Meanwhile, Gaurav Kumar, son-in-law of Congress MLA Darshan Lal Mangupur, won a block samiti seat in Pojewal of SBS Nagar district with a margin of over 1,000 votes.
