LUDHIANA/CHANDIGARH: Punjab's main opposition party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on monday cancelled its rally on the occasion of Chhapar Mela, nearly 30 kilometres from the district headquarters, due to rain.

Party spokesperson Darshan Singh Shankar said due to rain they had to cancel the rally at Chhapar Mela at the last minute. He said while the ruling Congress and the Akali Dal have huge coffers to arrange such rallies, they survive on hard-earned public donations which they did not want to waste it.

“We did not want to create inconvenience to our supporters as a high alert was already issued due to incessant rain in the entire northern region of the country,” said Darshan Singh. Also, the rebel AAP faction led by Sukhpal Singh Khaira did not conduct the political conference during the annual fair. AAP state leaders, including new leader of opposition Harpal Singh Cheema, Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann were expected to address the rally.

PARTY POSTPONES GHERAO OF CM’S HOUSE

AAP also postponed gherao of chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s official residence in Chandigarh on Tuesday in view of heavy rains and flood threat in the state. Leader of opposition Harpal Singh Cheema said the party had planned the protest against the police inaction against a Congress leader in a case of assault on its candidate in Sangrur during the rural polls, but had to call it off.
