THREE PERSONS HAVE BEEN BOOKED

FOR MURDER BID ON SHIV SENA (HIND) PRESIDENT NISHANT SHARMA

RUPNAGAR : A day after he was convicted of cheating and sent to Rupnagar district jail for four years, three inmates attackedNishant Sharma, 35, president of a right-wing organisation, Shiv Sena (Hind), inside his cell on Tuesday morning.

Police sources said Ramandeep Singh Bagga, alias Canadian, an undertrial in the murder case of Ludhiana RSS leader Ravinder Gosain in October 2017, along with Bahadur Singh and Balpreet entered Sharma’s cell about 8.45am after breaking open locks to three doors and assaulted him.

In 2011, Sharma had attacked Babbar Khalsa militant, Jagtar Singh Hawara, during his court appearance in Chandigarh. This is seen as the reason for Tuesday’s assault. Sharma’s organisation is active in Mohali and Jalandhar. The assailants used the iron handle of a serving spoon in the attack, injuring Sharma on shoulder, hand and chest. He was provided treatment at the Rupnagar civil hospital and then shifted to Pathankot jail.

Jail superintendent Baljit Singh Vaid said, “Head warder Malkit Singh, and warders Sodhi Ram and Kashmir Singh have been suspended.”

Rupnagar station house officer Sunny Khanna said, “We have booked three inmates Ramandeep Singh Bagga, Bahadur Singh and Balpreet under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
