Shooter Mane bags silver, India open medal account at Youth Olympics

BUENOS AIRES: India opened its medal account in the Youth Olympic Games with shooter Tushar Mane bagging a silver in the men’s 10m air rifle on the opening day of competitio­ns here on Sunday.

Mane, who qualified third for the final, shot 247.5 to win the silver while Grigorii Shamakov took the gold with 249.2. Aleksa Mitrovic of Serbia won the bronze with a score of 227.9.

It was close fight among the three podium finishers till the end and Mane edged out Mitrovic for the silver medal by collecting 228.0 as against 227.9 of the Serbian shooter in the penultimat­e round. But, the final round was not the best one for the Indian as he shot 9.6 and 9.99 while the eventual gold winner had 10.4 and 10.7.

Tababi Devi Thangjam qualified for the final of the women’s 44kg judo competitio­n with a 10-0 win over Ana Viktorija Puljiz of Crotia. In women’s singles badminton, Jakka Vaishnavi Reddy defeated Elena Andreu of Spain 21-13 21-6 in her opening match.

Also, the Indian U-18 men’s hockey team registered an emphatic 10-0 win over Bangladesh in their opening Hockey 5s campaign on a positive note. India is being represente­d by 46 athletes in 13 sports. India won two medals in the 2014 edition in Nanjing, China.

KEERTHANA WINS TITLE

MUMBAI: India’s Keerthana Pandian won the girls’ title in the IBSF World Under-16 Snooker Championsh­ips, her maiden internatio­nal crown.

In the correspond­ing boys category, Ben Martens of Belgium clinched the title in St Petersburg, Russia

RAYHAN ENDS TIED 2ND

SINGAPORE: Indian teenager Rayhan Thomas came within a striking distance of creating history before finishing tied second at the elite Asia-Pacific Amateur Championsh­ips here. Thomas’ tied second is the best finish ever by an Indian in the 10-year history of the Championsh­ips.

INDIA FINISH THIRD

THIMPHU:India women beat Bhutan by a solitary strike from Devneta Roy to finish third in the U-18 SAFF Football Championsh­ip on Sunday. Devneta scored the winner in the 73rd minute which proved to be the difference between the two teams in a closely contested encounter.

TAMIL THALAIVAS WIN

CHENNAI: Defending champions Patna Pirates began their title defence on a disappoint­ing note as they crashed to 26-42 defeat against Tamil Thalaivas in the opening match of Pro Kabaddi League. Skipper Ajay Thakur scored 14 points.
