Punjab gives away ₹15.5 crore to its medallists

CHANDIGARH: Punjab government presented cash rewards worth ₹15.55 crore to 23 players in recognitio­n of their medal winning performanc­es at the recently held Commonweal­th and Asian Games on Thursday.

Giving the awards chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh reiterated his government’s commitment to promote sports at the grassroots to motivate youngsters.

Legendary athlete Milkha Singh was also present at the felicitati­on ceremony.

Among those honoured were Heena Sidhu, who has been awarded ₹1.75 crore for clinching gold, silver and bronze medals in shooting at Commonweal­th and Asian Games.

Other awardees in the Commonweal­th category include Pranav Chopra (₹75 lakh for gold in badminton), Anjum Moudgil (₹50 lakh for silver medal in shooting), Navjeet Kaur Dhillon (₹40 lakh for winning bronze medal in discus throw), Vikas Thakur (₹40 lakh for bronze in weightlift­ing).

The Asian Games gold medal winners, including Tejinder Pal Singh Toor and Swaran Singh, were presented ₹1 crore each. The silver medallists received ₹75 lakh, while the bronze medal winners were given ₹50 lakh.

Among other awardees were the hockey players who won the bronze at the Jakarta Asian Games.

They were awarded ₹50 lakh each.

Others who were honoured include Pardeep Singh, Sukhmeet Singh, Arpinder Singh, Randeep Kaur Khehra, Reena Khokhar, Rupinder Pal, Gurjit Kaur, Akashdeep Singh, Manpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh, Harmanpree­t Singh, Simranjeet Singh, Krishna Bahadur Pathak, Dilpreet Singh, Bhagwan Singh and Varun Kumar.
