ROHTAK :A consumer court judge in Jhajjar district fined a mobile phone company for falsely advertising their phone as water-proof, after he soaked the phone in a pot filled with water and it stopped functioning.

The judge was hearing the complaint of city resident Sahil Jaswal who had purchased the phone last year in May at a cost of ₹56,900. Jaswal complained that soon after purchasing the phone, it stopped working due to some manufacturing defect. He said he filed a complaint with the phone company but did not get any help. He then approached the consumer court, which directed the company to repair Jaswal’s phone. After he got the repaired phone, it stopped working yet again due to water damage. Jaswal approached the consumer court yet again to complain about the phone company’s false advertisement of the product as water-proof.

During Wednesday’s hearing, the representative of the phone company told the court they have repaired the phone and it will not stop working again in case of water damage. To check the same, the judge asked for a bowl and filled it with water, and soaked the phone in it in front of the company representative.

The phone stopped working. The judge then imposed a fine of ₹7,500 on the company and ordered it to either give a new functional set to the complainant or return the complainant’s money.
