ROHTAK/HISAR: In a grim reminder of the state of employment in Haryana, hundreds of job-seekers turned up to submit their forms for a three-month contractual job in the roadways as soon as the government invited applications.

The government had invited applications to recruit around 500 drivers and 900 conductors for a duration of just three months after terminating services of some roadways staff over their ongoing strike.

The candidates, however, were worried on whether the vacancies would still be valid when the roadways staff ends their strike.

“The recruitment seems a little dicey since such drama of sacking and re-hiring goes on in the government. I have come because I urgently need job to support my family. I’m only hoping that this recruitment is not quashed once the roadways strike ends,” said Amit Kumar, a 32-year-old from Kiloi village.

In qualifications, the government has asked for at least three years of heavy vehicle driving experience for the posts of drivers. However, most candidates admitted they did not posses much experience.

Meanwhile, the strike entered fifth day on Saturday. The demands of the Roadways employees have been supported by all the political parties who have now visited them at bus stand in Rohtak. After former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda and leader of opposition Abhay Chautala, AAP Haryana convener Naveen Jaihind also visited the protest spot on Saturday and supported the demands of the striking employees.

In Hisar, more than 2,000 youths, including women, lined up at the bus stand workshop on Saturday to submit their forms.

Heavy police force was deployed at the bus stand main gate to maintain law and order. Talking with Hindustan Times, Hisar deputy commissioner (DC) Ashok Kumar Meena said that after getting orders from the government for hiring of bus drivers and conductors on contractual basis, the local administration speeded up the work.

Sonia, a resident of Hisar city, said she had completed her graduation and is pursuing a course in textile fashion designing at Industrial Training Institute (ITI) from Hisar.

“As soon I came to know about the post, I reached here with my forms for submission for the post of bus conductor.”
