GURUGRAM: The police, on Monday, booked 76-year-old Harnek Singh Dhillon for allegedly murdering his wife, 72-year-old Gurmel Dhillon, at their house in DLF Phase-2 on Saturday. Action was taken after the autopsy report released on Monday indicated that this was not a case of suicide.

Forensic expert Deepak Mathur, who conducted the postmortem examination of Gurmel’s body, said there was one deep cut at the throat extending around the neck. “It is unlikely that it is a case of suicide. It looks like a homicide. She died due to excessive bleeding,” Mathur said.

On Saturday around 9.30am, the police control room received a call informing that an elderly couple had allegedly killed themselves at their house in DLF Phase 2. The call was made by a relative when he got messages from Dhillon stating that his wife was dead and he was bleeding profusely.

The police had found Dhillon in a semi-conscious state with his wrist slashed and Gurmel dead with stab wounds. Dhillon survived as the police rushed him to a hospital, where he is recuperating.

The police had also recovered a suicide note-cum-will from the spot. “The note, carrying signatures of the couple, mentions that the couple had decided to end their lives willingly and no person was responsible for their death. It seems that the husband had signed on behalf of his wife too,” DLF Phase 2 station house officer Vishnu Prasad said, adding that the police was verifying the veracity of the note.

Assistant commissioner of police (crime), DLF, Shamsher Singh said the reason for the alleged murder and suicide attempt was not known and will become clear once the statement is recorded.

The police are expected to record Dhillon’s statement today after he was declared stable Monday.

“The couple had no property other than the house in DLF phase 2.

They belonged to Ludhiana but had sold their land long ago. Their daughter was in touch with the father, but the son had not spoken with him in many years,” said Singh.
