GURUGRAM: The fate of over 1,000 students at Government Senior Secondary School in Civil Lines hangs in the balance with two acres of the school premises set to be transferred for the proposed expansion of the adjacent Civil Hospital building before the next academic session. School authorities said that neither had they been given a time frame for the proposed takeover of property or informed about alternative school relocation options.

According to the school authorities, a patwari (revenue official) had visited the school last month and earmarked two acres of a total of 3.5 acres after an assessment. “The hospital will take two acres of school land. We have informed the department that it will be difficult to manage our state of affairs if the land is taken away,” Geeta Arya, principal of the school, said.

Dinesh Shastri, district education officer, said that the higher education department would finalise the details regarding the transfer. “We were asked to provide information about the area of the school and the number of children that study there. We have already given the same to higher authorities ,” Shastri said.

Two school campuses operate out of the premises — Government Primary School, Police Lines, which has classes from one to five, and Government Senior Secondary School (Boys), Civil Lines. The school is one of the oldest in the city.
