What is the most important thing that one needs before riding a bicycle? Tyres. So it won’t be wrong to say that women are the tyres of our nation.

We say that India is working to achieve gender equality. Ancient times, however, tell us a different story of exploitation of women. Now is the right time to take initiatives to ensure greater representation of women in top-level jobs.

Whenever a parent is asked about the career choice they would prefer for their son, doctor or scientist is the most common response.

While they want their sons to bag top-level jobs, not many expect their daughters to become CEOs of a global companies. In fact, they are sceptical about future of their daughters. If government and private sectors work to encourage and motivate women, they can surely make a place for themselves at the top.

This can be done by improving women’s financial condition and making new laws for them. Support like reservations for women can help tremendously.

Restrictions imposed on women, for example they shouldn’t stay out late night and similar stereotypes, can be overcome.

Women should also be given access to more assets and property rights so that they can start their own business.

NGOs and media should be engaged to create awareness about women empowerment. There is a need to rise above orthodox thoughts, particularly in a male-dominated society like ours.
