HISAR : Chief secretary (CS) DS Dhesi ordered the Fatehabad deputy commissioner (DC) JK Abhir to suspend two sarpanches and one namberdar of different villages under the Fatehabad district on Sunday, as they did not cooperate with the Haryana government’s announcement of total ban on stubble burning in the state.

Dhesi gave the orders during a meeting here and directed all the officials, sarpanches and namberdars to strictly monitor stubble burning cases in their areas and to keep informing the administration regarding the same.

Those suspended are sarpanches of Hijrawan Kalan and Hijrawan Khurd villages and namberdar of Kashimpur village, as many cases of stubble burning were reported from these villages and the sarpanches and namberdar did not inform the administration about them.

During the meeting, Dhesi said that the officials will also keep an eye on the annual confidential reports (ACR) of the sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) and there will be a comment section in the ACR regarding how an SDM performed his duty.

Giving a figure regarding stubble burning cases in Sirsa and Fatehabad districts, Dhesi said, “Farmers of Sirsa and Fatehabad districts grow paddy on 2 lakh hectares, but when it comes to stubble burning, the contribution of these just two districts is about 49% of the total stubble burning in the state.”

He further lauded Fatehabad DC’s decision of cancelling arms license of farmers involved in stubble burning. He said that such hard decisions are the need of the hour to curb stubble burning in the state.

Dhesi said that the government has launched several awareness programmes in villages and their results are fruitful.

Addressing mediapersons in Hisar, Dhesi said that the Haryana government has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) under which there will be many small scale compressed bio-gas (CBG) plants that will purchase stubble from the farmers.

He said that compared to last year, there was a sharp decline in stubble burning cases in Haryana, adding that last year, only 2% of total paddy sowing area was burnt and it declined to 1% this year.
