Relocation of Bhagtanwala garbage dump: Residents start campaign
AMRITSAR: The members of Sanjhi Sangharsh Committee and local residents joined hands and started a protest campaign on Wednesday, against the unfulfilled pre-poll promise of chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh to relocate Bhagtanwala garbage dump from the city.
Bhagtanwala garbage dump is located in a residential area in the city, close to the Golden Temple, and its relocation was a main issue for the Congress government before elections.
Under the campaign ‘Ek Fariyad Mukhya Mantri Ke Naam’, the residents have decided to send as many as 100 open letters and post cards, daily, to the chief minister in order to urge him to fulfil the promise of relocation of the garbage dump.
On the occasion of Children’s Day, students of the various schools located in Bhagtanwala area, also wrote post cards to the CM urging him for the same.
Meanwhile, the agitating residents have been demanding for the relocation of the garbage dump on outskirts of the city since long.
Vice-president of Sanjhi Sangharsh Committee, Sandeep Kurl, said, “We are protesting from over 2 years now, but to no avail. Before the assembly elections, the CM had announced that he will relocate the junk pile, but his promise has not been fulfilled yet. The proposal to shift the dumping site was even mentioned in the Congress’ election manifesto. Besides, many politicians have also participated in our protest time to time, but no action has been taken so far. Our target is to post over 1 lakh open letters.”
“Due to the lackadaisical approach of the authorities, we are facing huge problem. The place badly stinks and is unhygienic for all. Moreover, it is a home to several stray animals and make the residents vulnerable to diseases like dengue, malaria among others,”said Vibhanshi Arora, a local resident.
Gurpreet Kaur, another resident said, “This area is very close to the Golden Temple and if the government can make ‘No Pollution Zone’ outside Taj Mahal, then it should do the same here as well.”
