PROMOTIONS WERE LONG DUE; FOR MANY THIS IS THEIR FIRST PROMOTION IN THREE DECADES

FARIDKOT:Additional director general of police Rohit Chaudhary visited Modern Jail, Faridkot, and Central Jail, Ferozepur, on Saturday and handed over promotion letters to 38 staffers — eight in Faridkot and 30 in Ferozepur.

ADGP Chaudhary said the department decided to promote those who have already served for over 25 years.

“We have also introduced posts of 150 sub-assistant superintendent (equal to rank of ASI) and senior assistant superintendent (equal to sub-inspector rank) to boost the cadre morale,” he said.

A senior official of jail department seeking anonymity told HT that the jail staff had been waiting for promotions. He said such moves will thwart cops from wrongdoings, such as providing prohibited things to inmates for petty gains.

Bhupinder Singh got his first promotion after spending 28 years in service. He was recruited as a warder (constable) in 1989. Similarly, Nachattar Singh, who was promoted as senior assistant superintendent, said he joined the service in 1985 as warder and his promotion was due since 2011.

Chaudhary said the department has also introduced ‘one rank, one promotion’ for all the staffers with 30 years of service. The department will install 50 high resolution cameras each in Muktsar, Bathinda and Faridkot jails.

He said that 4G jammers will also be installed very soon as the survey for the same is already underway.

“We are also getting notified from the Punjab and Haryana high court for having court rooms in Patiala and Faridkot jails for hearings of special cases,” Chaudhary said.

Public phone calling facility will be also improved in the jails for the convenient of inmates, he said. On prisoner Jasbir Singh who went missing from Faridkot jail recently, he said the probe is on in the matter.
