SAHIL’S FRIENDS HAD CLASH WITH RIVAL GROUP OF STUDENTS 2 DAYS AGO; HE HAD INTERVENED AND SAVED HIS FRIENDS

ROHTAK: A BA final-year student was brutally stabbed to death by around a dozen men on the campus of Rohtak’s Pandit Neki Ram Sharma College on Wednesday. The college is the alma mater of chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

The incident occurred at the college canteen even as a police van stood outside the gate.

The deceased has been identified as Sahil Kumar, a resident of Alipur village in Jind. He lived in the college hostel built on its premises. He was associated with the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student-wing of the Congress.

The police said Sahil’s friends had a clash with a rival group of students two days ago in the college, during which he had intervened and saved his friends.

The other group had then threatened him of dire consequences. On Tuesday, too, the two groups had clashed again and exchanged threats, the police said.

On Wednesday, Sahil was going to the canteen when around 12 men cornered him and started stabbing him in the chest with knives. He tried to run away, but could not. The accused allegedly stabbed him 15 times, and whisked away through the posterior gate of the campus to evade the police that was deployed at the main gate.

Some eyewitnesses said the entire incident was caught on a CCTV camera and was allegedly being streamed live in the surveillance room.

Several students and teachers were present at the spot, but nobody intervened and came for Sahil’s help.

He was rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), where he was he died during treatment.

The postmortem was conducted and his body was handed over to his family late in the evening.

College principal Poonam Malik said the old rivalry seems to be the reason behind the murder.

The police said they have registered a case of murder and have identified the four accused so far. All of them are on the run.

Rohtak SP Jashandeep Singh Randhawa has formed six police teams to nab the accused.
