AMRITSAR : In protest against the state government and police over alleged deterioration of law and order situation in the state, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday took out a rally here on Thursday.

As many as 150 party volunteers, led by Sangrur MLA Harpal Singh Cheema, Bathinda MLA Baljinder Kaur and Majha zone party chief Kuldeep Dhaliwal, started the protest from Bhandari Bridge to the DC office where they submitted a memorandum to an administrative official in the absence of deputy commissioner Kamaldeep Singh Sangha, seeking immediate action against “failed control”.

Wearing ‘black bands’ and holding banners which displayed their demands, workers and party leaders raised slogans against the Punjab government and police.

“The Captain government has turned a blind eye at a time when the police have failed to control crime,” said AAP leader Kuldeep Dhaliwal. He added that 15 days have passed since a party leader was shot at but the police are yet to trace the accused. Former chief of the party’s Amritsar City unit, Suresh Sharma, was injured after an unidentified assailant fired four shots at him on November 21. Addressing residents, AAP MLA Harpal Cheema said, “With each passing day, crime in the state is rapidly increasing. Along with an AAP member, several similar incidents have taken place but police have failed to curb the rising crime. AAP will not tolerate this failed control by police.” Party leaders also threatened to intensify the protest in other districts of the state soon.
